i like this video
N.A.S.A. "Gifted" (feat. Kanye West, Santogold, & Lykke Li)
this is a great track, it's better than a reeses peanut butter cup having 3 great flavors that taste great together! there are parts of the video that remind me of the nooka extra-dimensional video which you can view here. it's great to think that we could provide a little inspiration sometimes:) i can't wait to hear what santogold's next album will sound like...still listen to the debut over and over...
as can be expected, kanye has a great eye and the art direction of the video was most certainly his. great job!
thank you miho for sending me the link.

the nature of the blogger
i had a lovely brunch with my friend sam this weekend. he is a fellow entrepreneur and even more media-savvy than myself. he also is a reader of my blog and he always presses me to write more of the personal insights he knows i have [on business, design, society etc.] on my blog assuring me that it will be more interesting to my readers.
now, i usually tell sam that this blog is not my personal blog [i actually do not have a personal blog], and that i have to edit and tailor my 'voice' for various audiences and purposes. the nookastyle blog is a hybrid. people who read it can see that it's not a corporate blog written by a PR agency, it is actually written by me. this supports the argument that it is a personal blog or rather matthew waldman is nooka and nooka is matthew waldman. but does this mean i have to write about my political views or air dirty laundry about people i work with?
i honestly would prefer to write more in the rant style of my conversation, but as many tv stations post before a news opinion segment "the views of the speaker do not reflect the views of the management of this station". that said, although the nooka design studio is more a socialist commune in structure, i am still the creative director and ceo and can probably say with 90% certainty that my views do reflect the views of the station. but all this brings up the crux of the matter. i do self-edit. i am also edited by others [i have to show amazing restraint not to write about the AMAZING new products i've designed as to not undermine the great work my press agents plan for example]. i self-edit because my views on many matters are not so much controversial as open to misinterpretation when voiced by someone such as myself. and as i like the voice of nooka to represent the brand values, i may need to add "controversial" as one of those values to support a change of voice [though i like the idea the more i type].
anyway, in traditional blog style, here is a morning brain dump. i will still post interesting celebrity nooka news AND make an effort to go back to at least one rant per week.

advanced package design

this semester i'm teaching the advanced package design class at parson's. i started with 13 students which have now dwindled to just 6, which is quite a loss for the students who dropped. the other way of looking at it is that the remaining students get more attention. today, i arranged a trip for them to material connexion, an incredible resource for all kinds of designers: architects, industrial, product and even graphic designers! michael lagreca [pictured with some of my students in this foto] was kind enough to make time and give them the overview. as parson's students, they have access to the database even from the school library. the designers at nooka at frequent visitors of the material connection library as well.
visit the material connexion website here.

openers japan article march

i write a monthly article for the fabulous openers online magazine in japan, and for march, i was out of ideas on how to write another article that encapsulates fashion/design and my world with a focus on NYC when i hardly leave my apartment or office when here in NYC! an idea came to me after lunch with my friend yoko in february when i turned 44 on the theme of how we all have uniforms whether we're aware of it or not, and how my uniform has shifted over the years from artist to graphic designer, and is now getting more fashion insider. i know it can read as shameless self promotion, which is actually fine – there's nothing wrong with my look as a branding project. post in japanese here.

studio visit: limité magazine

this wednesday i finally met up with the brains behind limité magazine, adrian farquharson in my nyc studio. we had a great chat and found out that we both graduated from the same high school [but no joke, different centuries!]. you can check out his tastemaker site here. note to self: green makes me look very very very pale!
i also noticed that he has a great post on the nookanooka today. thanks adrian!
