the weardrobe nyc conference

if you’ve been following the weardrobe nyc conference, you’ve probably read about or seen photos from some of the events. nooka was given the opportunity to be one of the sponsors and we're glad we could help. if you don't know about it, it was the first ever conference for young women fashion bloggers. learn more about it here.

here's a bit of a recap, courtesy of suzanne xie, "overall, the conference was a truly unforgettable and once-in-a-lifetime experience for the bloggers involved. the conference officially kicked off on friday afternoon, where we had a meet&greet in the penthouse suite at the gramercy park hotel. the first day consisted of a street style photo shoot in gramercy park, goodie bags and an open forum pizza dinner. the first night ended with drinks on the rooftop of the hotel. the second day was epic, starting with a brunch at eat records in brooklyn and a Fred Flare shopping spree, continuing on to more thrifting in brooklyn and finally a diy challenge with pac sun denim. after hours of studding, shredding and pinning, the girls were ready for a delicious dinner at the fat hippo with gilt groupe. Day three was also a nonstop day of Soho shopping, traffic stopping photo shoots, blogging workshops, all starting with a scrumptious press brunch at lure fishbar. after such a full weekend of shopping and shooting, it was only natural that we reserved our last day for a blogger clothing swap, photo booth shots and a teary-eyed farewell brunch".

nooka sighting: tina roth eisenberg

i am very late in posting this, but late is better than never! i hired tina as a graphic design intern fresh after her graduation from a german design school YEARS ago – and here she still is in NYC – a design STAR! i am so proud!

tina roth eisenberg, known for her design blog, swiss miss, was featured in the current food issue of print magazine for her father's fondue recipe and if i must say so myself, it is to die for [as long as i remember to take my lactaid tablet!]. pictured above, tina is wearing a nooka zenh gg. inlcuded below is tina's recipe!

Hans-Ruedi's (swiss miss's dad's) fondue recipe

ingredients (serves 4)
* 0.7 lbs gruyere cheese
* 0.5 lbs appenzeller cheese
* 0.5 lbs vacherin cheese (all cheeses should be from switzerland)
* 1 garlic clove, peeled
* 11/2 cups dry white wine
* 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
* 2 shot glass of kirsch
* 4 tsp. cornstarch
* a few gratings of freshly ground pepper nutmeg
* for dipping: crusty french bread, cut into bite-sized cubes (leave a piece of crust on each cube), soft-boiled new potatoes, or broccoli florets.

directions

1. rub the inside of fondue pan with the garlic. add the wine and lemon juice and bring to a bare simmer over medium heat.
2. add shredded cheeses, stir, and melt slowly. the fondue can bubble gently, but do not boil. mix kirsch with cornstarch and add to fondue while stirring. season with nutmeg and pepper.
3. transfer to table and keep warm over a fondue burner. serve immediately with dipping ingredients.

Fashion Week: Monarchy

fashion brand, monarchy, by designer eric kim, puts on quite a show. monarchy is a leading men's and women's fashion brand that was established 2004. monarchy is a favorite among the hollywood elite and nooka was privileged to be featured in their fall 2009 fashion show this past friday on the male models walking the runway at the tents in bryant park. learn more about this great brand here. the boys at mao pr put together a great show – thanks for the great seats! i really enjoyed the music while waiting for the show to start, need to get the soundtrack. moreover, the audience was a who's who of cable television fashion. i was happy to run into old friend J alexander who i've known since we were both teenage club kids in a very different and gritty NYC [and so happy to see his continued success with america's next top model!]

unfortunately, my fotos are all too blurry to use, so using the ones on getty images for now. does anyone out there have better fotos for me to post?

nyc gift fair and areaware's design to go

i went to the new york gift show yesterday to show my support for fellow designer friends like jan habraken, joey roth, lucy sisman, sherwood forlee, toru nagai, kip kotzen, noel wiggins or areaware and others. we don't show there as there is bad blood between nooka and george little management, but i was impressed with the energy at this year's accent on design section. kip launched his own showroom, neo-utility, which has a wonderfully curated collection of fine objects from around the world, featuring many of idea japan's products. this is the closest thing NYC has to a design week for product design, so we take what we can get here.

equally impressive was the after party by areaware at the NYC port authority! chad phillips of kidrobot dj'd the party in the iconic soon to be demolished space [which was donated by the city]. it was an international who's who of product design. i chatted with jan habraken, marcus greinke of charlesandmarie.com [top left photo], the host noel [picture with me in the photo upper right], harm magis of jansen+co of the nederlands [photo lower right]. had a nooka sighting on a designer from dror, drank free wine. again, great energy. read more about the shop on the coolhunting site here.

nooka is available at fine shops and online here.

in addition: noo music playing in the nooka lab this week: see mystery lights by YACHT, we hear you by luke vibert, the quicksand ep by la roux AND anything by little boots!

noo retail partner: odin new york

there are few milestones that i set for the nooka sales team in regards to placement, some of which are stores i want to see my designs in. well, one of those milestones was achieved this month with our debut at odin nyc – one of my favorite shops. odin is a curated retail experience, much like the select shops i'm used to shopping at when i'm in tokyo (which is to say, whether you buy clothes, shoes, bags, or accessories [now including nooka], you can be confident that you end up with one cohesive look and aesthetic). being that the common denominator in my wardrobe is neutral grey, what better a store than odin!

odin is located at 199 Lafayette St New York, NY 10012-4003 (212) 966-0026 open daily from 11am-8pm. their website is here. they have a great edited collection of nooka styles in all our price points. the staff are amazing [they'll keep bags behind the counter for you while you shop] and you can always enjoy the best mexican food in manhattan at la esquina on the same block [where else can you sometimes find huitlecoche, my FAVORITE edible fungus?!?] before or after you shop.

nooka is available at other fine stores and here! follow nooka on twitter: nookaNOW look for posts from matthew waldman on spacecollective.com/NOOKANYC
