ok...i've noticed a more than seasonal drop in web traffic to both my blog and nooka.com which i hope means people are busy out of doors making money. i will take today as an opportunity to update stuff that ends up on twitter and not here.

a few weeks ago jeff sheldon of ugmonk stopped by the studio wearing his nooka watch. jeff works in a studio that specializes in extreme sports marketing, but his own line of t-shirts is his side project i was aware of. i wear his "and then i woke up" t-shirt as often as i wash it! get yours here.

last week, photographer and media impresario derrick gomez stopped by the studio to chat and catch up. i love that he refers to my office as the nooka lab and i think i'll start doing the same. see his site, photography, and blog here.

not sure if i blogged this before, but i was nominated and accepted to be a fellow of the royal society for the arts in the UK. this means i now can put the letters F.R.S.A after my name. My friend darren in london has been busy collecting letters for his name and he's helping me do the same! the rsa is an amzing organization and they have a well developed design outreach program. check out their design and society blog here.

other non related bloggo-bit: saw 2 films at the tribeca film fest: the girlfriend experience and 7 minutes in heaven. both excellent but i can't see them making their way into theaters, at least in the US. will be great on HBO though. it was great being a VIP for a day!

nookanooka soon in tokyo

i was told to customize a nookanooka for a character designer-related show in japan in june but that's all the information i have so far. i'm very excited to post photos of the piece i did, including 2 process shots that show my hand-drawn sketch [the hand painting is my designer paul here in the nooka studio]. as i designed the nookanooka myself, i found quite a mental block to design a "custom" version [how does one work on a collab with oneself!?] and went through 5 nookanookas before arriving at a design i think works!

my first sketches were very graphical, applying 2-D patterns to areas of the character [playing on the hyper-dimensional elements of the nookanooka story]. my second set was to play solely with texture and color, even as far as getting quotes from a taxidermist to cover one of the nookanookas with deer fur [to play with the shape-shifting elements of the story]! what i ended up with is what you see in the fotos: simply using the nookanooka as a canvas to bring a doodle to life, perhaps alluding to the various emotive states the character can display. my working title is Hello Killy [ハロー霧].

i will post again when i know more details on the show.

nooka collab: bleed

i became friends with the guys at bleed the very first design tide i took part of in tokyo when it was in a funky building on meiji-dori [tokyo] and have talked of doing a collaboration since then – well, it's about to drop in an extremely limited edition. gorgeous gold silk screened design on leather and our signature zen-h face.

bleed is an interdisciplinary studio in norway and i hear their space is very cool and hope to visit them there some day. check out their site here.

nooka sightings: willy northpole

willy northpole and his lovely manager tiffany came by the studio yesterday around lunchtime and not hours later a bright red nooka zub is seen on BET with ludacris and lil scrappy! willy is a real gentleman for a gangsta rapper and someone to watch. let me know if you find an HD version of the vid clip and i'll update this post.
