nooka at project in las vegas september 1–3

now for the official launch, well official as in having the attention of buyers from around the world to see the new nooka strip [that's nookan for belt], nooka AO [nookan for wallet], the future distilled™ [the nooka scent] as well as our up and coming collections for our time pieces at project in las vegas!

we rarely do trade shows, but the strip, AO and fragrance all have more mass potential than our signature watches so i'm looking forward to the response...i think we're off to a good start as 2 of our products were highlighted in today's WWD which is their project las vegas special edition. learn more about project here. say hello to robert, christen and carrie as well as some regional sales rep who will all be there. i was told to stay away as buyers do not feel they can speak freely in front of the designers, as as much as i like making people nervous, i am also a business man.

can't make it to vegas, buy you nooka stuff or find out where to buy here. follow us on twitter.com/nooka and on facebook with the box on the right of this page.

on another note, this week has been full of amazing press which i hope to catch up blogging about. i was also in los angeles this past weekend [came back to nyc on tuesday night] which was a lot of fun, so i need to do a 'nooka loves L.A.' post soon too!

nooka sightings: SUGARKANE

leandro manuel emede is a director, photographer, sound & video editor, and most recently, a designer! he has developed sugarkane glasses (that are limited edition) that are delightfully asymmetric frames. they come in fun colors; the collection can be seen here. sugarkane glasses do not follow the lead of other optical frames so there is a some conceptual synergy between leo and myself – in actuality, he's purchased 2 nookas before i recently contacted him about his frames. always up for a trade, i got a pair of his frames for a nooka zirc which leo looks so good sporting in the fotos he sent RIGHT after he received it. fotos of me wearing sugarkane to come!

to purchase the nooka that leandro is wearing, the link is here.

also, don't forget to vote for nooka at pulchra. the voting process may seem a bit tedious, but it is actually really simple. simply drag nooka to the number 1 spot, if that's your choice of course and choose the other 9 objects until you have completed your list. In order for your vote to be valid, you will need to complete the details form. remember you can only vote ONCE PER DAY, so make sure to log on the next day and do it all over again. link is here!

nooka can be found in fine stores all over the world and here. follow nooka on facebook and twitter.

week-o-press!

this has been a very satisfying week for press and attention and wednesday's not even over! i even had to time to do something cultural – got a private tour of the frank lloyd wright show at the guggenheim with a group from the royal academy of arts [od which i am a fellow]. i highly recommend catching the show before it's over, really quite comprehensive and inspiring. about the show here.

there is great coverage on the opening of the nooka pop-up shop with a focus on the new nooka scent, including this link on partycrasher which includes an on-the-spot interview with me. i was told that i don't normally sound that gay, so it must be the tequila [and obviously, i'm sensitive to how i look and sound on camera!].

super flattering to have such great pieces on so many outlets. here are a few:
on mens style.com! wow
teen vogue. wow
j.c. reports. wow
the nooka strip on acquire. wow
on william yan's blog. wow

i don't want to alienate anyone, because i love all the press love, but there was also a great piece on nylon.com and other great fashion/trend blogs – too many to list! more great stuff coming up so i will update here occasionally.

ALSO...nooka sightings on youtube with dj splurt wearing the ever rad green urban camo nooka! here's a link to one of his shows. here.

nooka innovation: the nookard™

as many people who follow my blog know, futurism is a big theme in my work, and indeed, many of the nooka designs were conceived during a very optimistic time, the dot com bubble. it was at this time there was a clinton as president, the stock market was on fire, miu miu had a men's line, seiko had spoon as a sub-brand, and i was carving myself a niche in the new field of interactive design. spoon is gone, miu miu only has women's stuff, then as now, i am frustrated that the planes i board to go to tokyo are the same technology and design as the ones i boarded to go visit my grandfather as a child. so it seems my job of holding up my tiny torch of utopian optimism in design is ever more important.

i always present nooka as a design studio, the nooka lab, but as of this writing all we have is our line of time pieces. there are a few reasons why we are a bit slow releasing new lines, the major one being the down economy of the past year plus the fact that we are a small self-financed studio. also, unlike other design stars, my designs, though aesthetically slick have philosophical underpinnings – not that this makes me a perfectionist, but it does limit the type of products i can put my limited resources toward.

well, this is all about to change, but first a little story to get us there.

i must go back even further to 1984 when i ran my first design studio at the age of 19 with a friend who was a student at pratt – var grahics [even then, obsessed with universal communication, i wanted a name that had no linguistic ties to any one culture]. one our first projects was to come up with the look and feel of a new kind of credit card, one with an ic chip in it to act as a debit card or credit card with the goal of getting rid of physical checks. at this time it was quite revolutionary and i truly enjoyed making realistic comps of these cards [i wish i could remember the name of the company!]. before i saw them bring the project to fruition, i closed var graphics and moved to tokyo and never saw the product take hold in the US [though it was adopted in europe by the mid 1990s].

so now back to the dot com bubble of the mid/late 1990s. i'm back in new york and the creative director of a small interactive design studio, new york zoom where we quickly make a name for ourselves creating corporate identities for new media. i created the corporate identity for screaming media with jay chiat who was someone i admired since i was a teen. it was amazing to be able to work with him before he passed away. another start-up that contracted with us was called net-gen who were developing a back-end system for managing credit card usage for kids and teens – a great idea. it was quite the dream team on my end: tina eisenberg [neĆ© roth] now famous blogger swiss miss, alain grossenbacher [now the creative director at bodum], and of course me. we delivered a kick-ass identity system as well as a complete interface design for 3 different types of users. well...they didn't get their funding or were sabotaged by visa/mastercard [depending on which version of the story you hear] and another good idea never sees the light of day.

now we are in 2009 and i still have to fly in 1960s technology for 15 hours to get to tokyo when i was promised a 3.5 hour flight in a supersonic stratospheric jet as a child AND my wallet is full of a rediculous amount of plastic – credit cards, atm cards, id cards, store cards and paper currency. multiply this by 2 for the set i need to bring when i go to do work in my tokyo office. quite simply, bloated wallets ruin pants. the nooka solution to this design problem is to introduce the nooka card!

how does this story get us to my upcoming product launch you may be asking...

the nooka card ~ nookard™ streamlines access to all your financial tools into one single magnetic strip. a comprehensive web interface allows you to link any one of your bank accounts or credit cards to the nookard™. when you use the card at a terminal with a screen, a menu with all your linked accounts shows up for you or the shoppist to select. want extra security, add a password of your choice unique to each account or one as a master, or better yet, choose the "check photo id" option. not at a screen terminal? the account you select as primary will be used as a default. more than just that, you can protect the card by registering thes ites you shop on into the system so the card can never be used by anyone else. you can even require the extra security steps you choose for the check outs on the sites you frequent. the AMAZING thing about the nookard™ is the technology used to make all this magic happen – it's all existing for well over 10 years! why go use a time machine to go to the future when you can go back in time for innovation? WOW, the nookard can reduce average thickness and weight of your wallet by up to 99%! if any banks, visa. mastercard or amex want to license my scheme, it's not hard to contact me.

until the nookard system is adopted, you can help reduce pocket congestion by using the nooka AO [asset organizer], a color coded wallet system made of pliable silicone rubber – it conforms to the shape of your butt [flat or bubbiliscous] without breaking your cards and can be packed with cards without you 'losing' them behind a card in a too-tight slot of traditional wallets. keep one color for daytime and another for night / one for nyc, another for paris...seriously, it's a simple and elegant solution for organizing what goes in your pocket or bag. the nooka AO™ will be available in july! SRP is $35US. price and specifications subject to change.

so there you have it!

here is an interview with yours truly on the elsewares blog. elsewares is a wonderful online shop that has a long relationship with nooka – it truly is a one-stop online shop for curated designer goods and fashion accessories from "independent designers, artists and entrepreneurs".

totally unrelated, interesting insect of the week: Pterodictya Reticularis. do an image search. it secretes waxy plumes that unrelated butterfly larva live on. i think they are quite gorgeous to look at. if anyone finds an expert on them, let me know. i'm curious as to what benefit the bug gets from investing so much metabolic energy into a home for the larvae of an unrelated species.

advanced package design

this semester i'm teaching the advanced package design class at parson's. i started with 13 students which have now dwindled to just 6, which is quite a loss for the students who dropped. the other way of looking at it is that the remaining students get more attention. today, i arranged a trip for them to material connexion, an incredible resource for all kinds of designers: architects, industrial, product and even graphic designers! michael lagreca [pictured with some of my students in this foto] was kind enough to make time and give them the overview. as parson's students, they have access to the database even from the school library. the designers at nooka at frequent visitors of the material connection library as well.

visit the material connexion website here.

nooka is available at fine stores and here. remember, you get a free copy of deastro's keepers with every online watch order on this link while supplies last!

nooka cockoo is all-a-buzz: updated

i started getting emails from all over the world on tuesday when this post first sprung up on yanko.com – original post can be viewed here. some people wanted to know if i had seen this and others were concerned about legal issues. well, to answer the emails here: no, i did not know about it, and as for laws being broken, my understanding is that this is one of those grey areas. it is illegal to use someone's logo for unauthorized business purposes, and indeed, this is unauthorized. that said, it is legal to use other companies logos for editorial purposes, and perhaps creating a portfolio piece fits into this fair usage. that writ, i am not a lawyer. i guess i am flattered to see that nooka has such a positive image in the world that another designer would choose it as a reference point in a creative exercise. what do you think?

for blogs carrying the story, to be safe, our lawyers recommend the following disclaimer text:
"Nooka" is a registered trademark of Nooka Inc. (all rights reserved) and may not be used without its express written permission. Nooka Inc. has not reviewed and does not endorse any products, concepts or viewpoints expressed on this website, and no business relationship with Nooka Inc. is implied through any use of its trademark.

it's a common issue i think, and found this ad in this month's print magazine – funny as the same designer who did the nooka cockoo watch has a car freshner logo used in a t-shirt design on his own website...

swiss miss creative mornings: matthew waldman

2/27/09 Matthew Waldman from CreativeMornings on Vimeo.

i almost didn't publish this, but i guess a lot of people can't stand the way they sound recorded [not to mention the way one looks!]. so let's just say that looking at this hits on all of my insecurities. that writ, the response has been quite positive, so i'll let the webworld be the judge.

special thanks to tina roth of swiss miss, here amazing blog here, and parson's who donated the space. public speaking is really a wonderful way to test out ideas and thought processes so i really appreciate the opportunity tina presented.

nooka is looking for a superintern

one of my star employees, an assistant designer, has left our small studio to prepare to go back to college, which leaves us just a bit short handed. we need a superhero-level design assistant intern. spread the work, specs below:

Nooka is seeking a versatile, self-motivated graphic design student who has a solid understanding of Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign to work as an intern under the guidance of an art director and the Nooka design team. The intern will be responsible for concept development and creation of Nooka marketing materials ranging from the 2008 look book to product line sheets and advertisements. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be able to contribute to the design and maintenance of content for the Nooka website.

Internship can be part or full-time and is for school credits. Intern should be available to start asap. Length of internship is approximately three months, but could go into the summer if candidate is available.

To apply, please send a PDF of sample work or link to your online portfolio and your resume here. Only candidates selected for interview will be contacted. No phone calls please.

Aluminum [or Aluminium for the UK] Nooka

without any fanfare, we launched a line extension of nooka watches with aluminum cases and polyurethane bands with a butterfly closure. this creates an extremely light-weight watch with lots of opportunity for color variation. it also adds a model to our lineup with a sexy polyurethane strap that is replaceable – placing it in between our zubs and the v-series. i tried to come up with a model name that fits our current convention of z+identifying sound to no avail....ideas anyone?

quick facts about aluminum: it is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and the third most abundant element overall [after oxygen and silicon]. makes up close to 8% by weight of the earth’s crust... was once more expensive by weight than gold! napoleon bonaparte had a set of aluminium cutlery used for only his most honored guests – it was THAT expensive at that time. it is easier to recycle than to make from bauxite [aluminum never occurs in it's metallic state in the earth, which is why it took so long for it to be discovered] – so make sure you recycle even scraps of aluminum foil! read more about it here. thanks wikipedia!

these are available on our website now in black, anodized blue and anodized orange.

HK Press Milk and Milk-X

just sharing some december 07 press from my trip to hong kong in november 2007. great coverage but does anyone proof read in hong kong? they spelled my name: marrhew waldman throughout one of the articles! that said, i love these 2 magazines, they cover art, trends, urban culture and high fashion – each issue is full of cool stuff. also, this particular issue of milk-x has a lenticular cover [otherwise known as winky-dink technology]! i look pretty cute on the bed in my room at the JIA hotel as well.

i'm including a pic of the milk-x limited edition we created for the magazine. they took a better foto than we did.

thanks to allan of nooka hong kong for always arranging the best exposure for me.

the nooka nooka corporate mascot

Many of you may know Nooka from press and shops on planet earth, but did you know that the brand is developing quite a following in higher dimensions as well? Drawn to Nooka by the similar sound of their name, the Nookas, extra-dimensional beings, made themselves known to me. After top-secret negotiations, they agreed to let Nooka base a mascot on their likeness!

Produced in a limited edition of 333 pieces X 3 colors in luxurious vinyl, the Nooka Nooka will initially only be available to stores for display [as the ‘horns’ of the Nooka Nooka” are perfectly sized to display nooka watches]. Any leftovers will be available for sale signed by yours truly for hundreds of dollars each. Available in April 2008.

photo is a sneak preview...more to come closer to the release.

noo years predictions

happy new year everybody! i spent new years throwing a party in my apartment for friends but strangely, no one took any photographs! here are some of my loose predictions for 2008.

google phone: february 24, 2008 the google phone will be announced, but not a "techno-marvel" like the iphone , but rather a return to an old business model like broadcast television and radio -- totally free cell phone service supported by their already robust ad sales machine. this will revitalize the technology hardware sector as consumers, free from monthly bills, spend more and more on fashion driven handsets. savvy phone makers will hire nooka to develop high end models and interface innovations.

michael bloomberg will enter the presidential race by the end of january putting an articulate focus on issues, not party politics. it's a long shot, but i predict the following tickets: bloomberg/obama on both democrat and independent tickets, and huckabee/clinton on republican.

nooka zircs finally arrive in stores in spring causing a social trend and renewed interest in science fiction fashion. this catapults designer matthew waldman onto the scene as both a talk show host and action hero movie star.

the zirc on mocoloco

i'm sure everyone who reads my blog is a frequent visitor to mocoloco.com, but if not, you should check them out. they have nooka info before i get to update my own blog! from the quotes, i can see that this was written by someone at my sydney australia presentation 2 weeks ago THANKS! they are writing mainly on our upcoming zirc model which i think will be a hit. it's 45 x 35 mm with a flush right wrist band. the new display is more evocative of a analog watch, so i hope it will pique the interest of people who think nooka is too much for them.

these will be available spring 2008 from nooka.com and fine retailers everywhere.

sydney

i'm back in sydney for the 2nd time in 18 months – what a great city. the weather is perfect, the food is great, and the people are wonderful. the first day i was completely out of it as i couldn't sleep well on the flight [once you get used to flat beds on ANA or BA, nothing else makes the grade unfortunately]. day 2 [tuesday] was spent in the de de ce gallery on liverpool street to set up the space for the press presentation. john expected 30-50 people of which only 10 showed, but it was nice to actually talk to everyone who was there. hopefully we'll get some great press mentions and start moving greater numbers in australia.

i gave a good presentation, similar to the ones i did at pecha-kucha in tokyo and new york last year but in doing so, i realized the direction i need to rework it. right now the slide show and talk is more of a time line of my projects. i made a note to myself to re-do when i get back to nyc to support a "motivation", "inspiration", "influences", "nooka now" and then "nooka tomorrow" format. or...hire a proper video artist to make a presentation to press and play:)

today, wednesday, i had lunch with john of de de ce [he has been the most amazing host...had a great dinner with his wife amanda and robert tuesday night as well] and then went to visit the design shop at the sydney opera house and the shop at the sydney museum. saw the collection of the sydney museum and a free tour of the opera house [thanks guys!]. i walked back through the domain and half of hyde park all the way to darlinghurst.

photos: a snap of the crowd at my presentation, the fairy sculpture i made for the gallery [john has a collection of art/artifacts from everyone who he works with and have made the trek to oz]. parking and signage at the world heritage site sydney opera house.
